Diwali, Dipavali is derived from the Sanskrit word of Deepawali (दीप + अवलिः). 'Deep' means Lamps or Diyas and 'Awali' means line or row. This translates that Diwali means 'Row of Lights'.
Why Diwali is Celebrated
Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Ram, King of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana , Demon King of Lanka. The people of Ayodhya celebrated His return by lighting up earthen lamps and covering city under lights. This also ended Lord Ram's 14 years of exile on command of his father.
Ravana, the Demon King, abducted Lord Ram's wife Sita during their exile in the forests. This led Ram to fight with Ravana in alliance with the Vanaras .The battle ended in victory of Ram over Ravana and Hindus celebrate this day as Dusshera or Vijaydashmi. It took Ram 19 days to return to Ayodhya and Diwali comes 19 days after Dusshera.
